Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, must be given to those eligible to receive it. Allah specifies in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60) the eight categories of people eligible for Zakat: the poor, the needy, Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the wayfarer.
